Lying at the edge of South West England, the landlocked county of Wiltshire is famous for its picturesque towns and villages, nestled amid stunning English countryside. Wiltshire is a county steeped in history. Perhaps the first place that springs to mind is mystical Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain, followed by the breath-taking Salisbury Cathedral, the infamous Wiltshire White Horses and the Minster Church of Saint Denys in Warminster. The county’s largest town, Swindon, is a hotbed of multiculturalism (not to mention roundabouts). Swindon boasts a lively town centre, great rail links and top class shopping. Swindon is conveniently located on the M4 motorway corridor (junctions 15 and 16), along with Chippenham (junction 17), making either town ideal for the London or Bristol traveller. If you are staying in rural Wiltshire, towns such as Marlborough, Calne and Malmesbury are still within easy reach of M4 motorway links. This is perhaps why Swindon and the surrounding Wiltshire area have attracted a host of manufacturers and large-scale employers such as Honda, Motorola and Nationwide. Wiltshire is a large county covering 3,485 km2 with its municipal offices located in Trowbridge. There are various military establishments, particularly around Amesbury and Corsham.
As with the rest of South West England, Wiltshire has a temperate climate which is generally wetter and milder than the rest of the UK. Its residents enjoy a variety of entertainment including the Swindon and Chippenham Folk Festivals in May, the Devizes Festival and Summer Solstice in June and the Marlborough Jazz and Swindon Mela Festivals in July. Swindon Mela is more than just music and dance. Food is an essential ingredient and the Swindon Mela hosts exciting and diverse food stalls from a variety of caterers. An ideal day out to spice up your Wiltshire stay!
